Head Coach Joe Schmidle | 2019 WV State Champions, USA TODAY WV Coach of the Year
Coach Joe Schmidle is entering his tenth season at the helm of the University High School boys basketball program. Under his leadership, UHS won the 2019 WV State Championship, and were the OVAC 5 Champions in 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020. Coach Schmidle’s teams made state championship appearances for five consecutive seasons from 2017-2021, reaching the Final Four three times. Coach Schmidle was honored as the USA TODAY WV Coach of the Year for the 2018-19 season, the WV Coaches Association Coach of the Year in 2017, and the North-South All-Star Game Coach in 2018.
Coach Schmidle got his start in coaching at Fairmont State University where he was a student assistant coach before coaching at Central Preston Middle and Preston High School. As an athlete, Schmidle played basketball at Central Preston High School, Garret College, where he was named Region XX All Conference, and Fairmont State, where he won the HPERD Award for Outstanding Student-Athlete and graduated with honors.
Current UHS Hawks Players are also scheduled to help lead the coaching and teaching at the camp.
Skill Development
The UHawks Mini-Camp focuses on skill development and preparing athletes for competition at the next level. Participants will benefit from hands-on instruction, low student-teacher ratios, and high-quality organization and facilities.
Participants will learn basic technique and drills designed to improve their:
- Ball handling
- Passing
- Shooting
- Rebounding
- Offense
- Defense
Camp Benefits
Aside from excellent coaching, camaraderie, and fun, all participants will receive a UHawks Basketball team tee.
